How Much Does SEO Cost?
Most pages answer how much does SEO cost with it depends and ask you to book a call. Here are the published industry ranges instead, and what moves you within them.
How much should you expect to pay for SEO
Published rates for a local service business sit in the range of roughly $750 to $3,000 a month. Savvy Search Marketing puts that range on its own guide, and it matches what small trades and clinics typically get quoted.
Competitive, high-ticket verticals run higher. Blue Corona states on its own moving company page that its clients invest anywhere from $2,500 to $20,000 a month.
One-off audits from independent operators commonly sit in the hundreds to low thousands. Below the bottom of these ranges you are usually buying directory submissions and a dashboard, not work.
What decides where you land
Three things, and none of them is how big your company is.
How competitive your search results are. A single-location trade is a different job from a national brand fighting WebMD.
How much is already broken. A clean site with no links needs different work from one with hundreds of spam links pointed at it.
How many locations or services you are selling. Six clinics on one domain means six sets of location pages, which is more work than one.
If someone quotes a custom price without asking about all three, they are guessing.
Is paying someone to do SEO worth it
Sometimes no, and here is when. If you need customers this month, SEO is the wrong spend, because rankings take months to move and you should buy ads instead.
If nobody searches for what you sell, it is also wrong. Some businesses live on referrals and always will.
It is worth it when people already search for what you do and you are not the one they find. That is fixable, and it compounds, while ads stop the day you stop paying.
What you should not pay for
A guaranteed number one ranking. Nobody controls Google's results, and anyone promising a position is either overselling or planning something that gets you penalised.
A monthly report with no work attached. Ask what changed on the site last month, and if nobody can name three things you are buying a dashboard.
Links from a network. Cheap bulk links are one of the quickest ways to damage a site, and undoing it takes longer than building it did.
A twelve month lock-in. Three months is when ranking movement starts to show, and anything longer is usually about protecting the agency's revenue.
Does SEO cost more in the UK or Australia
The work does not change by country. What changes is how competitive your search results are, which is the first thing on the list above.
Most independent operators quote in one currency wherever the client is. Ask for the currency and the billing cadence in writing before you compare quotes.
How to check a quote is fair
Ask these four and watch what happens.
What will you actually do in month one? A real answer names specific pages and specific fixes.
How is month six different from month one? If it is identical, you are buying a subscription, not a project.
Who does the work, and what happens if it does not work? There is no single right answer to the second one, but there is a wrong one, which is pretending it cannot happen.

Questions I get asked first
What is a typical monthly SEO budget for a small business?
Published rates for local service businesses sit around $750 to $3,000 a month. Competitive high-ticket verticals like moving are quoted well above that by agencies in those spaces.
Why do SEO quotes vary so much?
Competition, how much is already broken, and how many locations or services you sell. Any quote that skips those three questions is a guess.
Should I pay for SEO upfront or monthly?
Monthly, with a short minimum. A twelve month lock-in paid upfront removes every incentive for the agency to keep shipping.
How long before I see anything for the money?
Months, not weeks. If you need customers this month, ads are the right spend and SEO is the wrong one.
What is the cheapest way to start?
A one-off audit that names specific fixes. It tells you how much is broken before you commit to a retainer.
